Jaider Esbell (1979, Normandia, RR - 2021, São Sebastião, SP), from the Macuxi people, was a multimedia artist and independent curator. His original cosmology and history make up the poetics of his work, in which reflection on mythical narratives and life in the Caribbean Amazon occupy a central place. From the Jaider Esbell Gallery of Contemporary Indigenous Art, founded by the artist in 2013 in the city of Boa Vista, he coordinated several initiatives with Indigenous artists from the circumro-Raima region and art-education activities in Indigenous, quilombola, riverside and peripheral urban communities. Since 2010, his paintings and drawings have been exhibited in individual and group exhibitions in Brazil and internationally. In 2013 he was curator and creator of the 1st Encontro de Todos os Povos in Boa Vista, Roraima, a project that had two more editions in 2014 and 2016 also under his curatorship. In 2016 he won the Pipa Prize in the online category and in 2018 he held the solo exhibition Transmakunaima: The Hole is further Down at the Memorial dos Povos Indígenas in Brasília. In 2019 he was curator of the Piatai Datai exhibition at Galeria Jaider Esbell de Arte Indígena Contemporânea and at Sesc Centro in Boa Vista, Roraima, and in the same year he participated in the Vaivém exhibition at CCBB. In 2020, he participated in the exhibition Vêxoa: We Know , at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. In 2021 he was a guest artist at the 34th Bienal of São Paulo, coordinating with the curator the participation of other Indigenous artists and was also curator of the Moquém_Surari' project, an exhibition of contemporary Indigenous art at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art. In 2022 he participated in the 59th Biennale di Venezia, as well as in several other group exhibitions in Brazil and other countries, such as Les Vivant (Lille, France), Mondo Reale (23rd Triennale Milano, Milan), Über Wasser und Pflanzen (Kunsthalle Rostock), Histórias Brasileiras ( MASP, São Paulo) among others. His work is now in collections such as the Center Pompidou and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, as well as in several internationally renowned private collections.
