Elena Valera Bawan Jisbe
Elena Valera Bahuan Jisbe (shipibo-konibo)
Was born in the Roya Community, Ucayali, in 1968. She is a pioneer of Shipibo-Konibo contemporary painting in Lima, an activity that, in her words, she started to work on at a very young age in the Seminary for Rural Andean History of the UNMSM with historian Pablo Macera. She participated in several exhibitions, among which: “Shipibo Paintings,” UNMSM, 1999; “Provinces of a Night Without Distance,” CCELIMA; “Myths, Rites and Payments,” Fundación Telefónica; “Water Snake: Indigenous Life in the Amazon,” 2003; “Green Eye: Amazonian Cosmovisions,” Fundación Telefónica, 2001; in the Abya Yala museum, in Quito, Ecuador, 2001; in the Hall of Exhibitions, Bilbao, Spain, Tremaine; in the Connecticut Gallery, 2004; in the SiLkeborg Museum, Denmark, 2008; “Green Power” at CCELIMA and in Buenos Aires. She has exhibited her work in “Amazons: a Parallel Exhibition of Peru” as a guest of honor and in Arco Madrid (Matadero) in 2019. Other highlights of her career are: “A less gray city of Lima - Jatibi Jonibao,” at the Municipal Gallery Pancho Fierro, 2019; “Visual Resistances: Aesthetics of a New Citizenship,” at the Limaq room of the Metropolitan Museum of the City of Lima, 2021. Her work is part of the collection of MUCEN and has been included in several publications, among which, El ojo que cuenta (G. Landolt, IKAM, 2005).
